Tom Summers is a trial lawyer with over 44 years of experience representing injured patients and their families in complex medical malpractice and personal injury cases in Maryland and nationwide.

His practice focuses primarily on medical malpractice on behalf of plaintiffs, and other personal injury matters, including automobile and tractor-trailer accidents, product liability, carbon monoxide poisoning, and premises liability cases.

Over the course of his career, Tom has obtained verdicts and settlements totaling millions of dollars for his clients, including a $12 million verdict in a urological injury case in Baltimore City and a $3.2 million verdict in a limb amputation medical malpractice case in Allegany County.

In addition to these marquee results, Tom has secured hundreds of settlements and verdicts in the five-, six, and seven-figure range in medical malpractice and other personal injury cases across all Maryland counties, the District of Columbia, and federal courts, as well as in multiple other states. His most notable results include a:

  • $7 million settlement in a birth injury case in federal court in West Virginia;
  • $5 million settlement in a tractor trailer and auto accident case in federal court in Baltimore;
  • $3 million settlement in a psychiatric medical malpractice case;
  • $2.5 million settlement in a product liability and medical malpractice case involving paralysis against an automobile manufacturer and a hospital.

Tom has also secured a settlement of over $4 billion in Maryland tobacco claims against the tobacco industry as part of the litigation and trial team representing the State of Maryland, where he focused on cancer issues and youth targeting.

He has tried or handled over 100 cases to verdict or resolution in every jurisdiction in the State of Maryland, as well as in the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Arkansas, New York, and the federal courts.

Over the course of 44 years, he has handled thousands of cases, taken or defended thousands of depositions, and argued hundreds of motions and appellate matters in courts across Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and other jurisdictions.

Before joining Ellin Law Group, Tom served for more than 25 years as chairman of the Medical Malpractice Department at the Law Offices of Peter G. Angelos, where he played a key role in major negligence cases involving tobacco, groundwater contamination, mass tort, and multidistrict litigation.

He began his legal career working for David Ellin’s grandfather, Marvin Ellin, from 1979 to 1989, gaining early experience in high-stakes trial work that continues to inform his practice today.

Tom is a native of Frederick, Maryland. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1978 and from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1981, where he was a finalist in the Moot Court.

Outside the courtroom, he is the father of three daughters, a role he considers his most significant accomplishment.
